Metric vs Imperial Area
A Complete System Comparison
Compare the SystemsThe world uses two main systems for measuring area: metric (square meters, hectares) and imperial/US customary (square feet, acres). 理解する both systems—their logic, applications, and conversions—is essential for international real estate, construction, and land measurement.
The Two Systems
Metric System
Based on the meter, with decimal relationships:
- Square centimeter (cm²): 0.0001 m²
- Square meter (m²): Base unit
- Are (a): 100 m² (rarely used)
- Hectare (ha): 10,000 m² (100m × 100m)
- Square kilometer (km²): 1,000,000 m²
Imperial/US Customary
Based on the foot and historical land measures:
- Square inch: 1/144 sq ft
- Square foot: Base unit for buildings
- Square yard: 9 sq ft
- Acre: 43,560 sq ft (land measurement)
- Square mile: 640 acres
Unit Comparison Table
| Metric | Imperial Equivalent | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cm² | 0.155 sq in | Small objects |
| 1 m² | 10.76 sq ft | Rooms, small areas |
| 100 m² (1 are) | 1,076 sq ft | Apartments |
| 1,000 m² | 10,764 sq ft (0.25 acres) | Large lots |
| 1 hectare | 2.47 acres (107,639 sq ft) | Farms, parks |
| 1 km² | 247 acres (0.386 sq mi) | Cities, regions |
Global Usage
| Country/Region | Primary System | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Imperial | Metric for science |
| United Kingdom | Mixed | Transitioning to metric |
| Canada | Metric (official) | Imperial common in real estate |
| Australia | Metric | Since 1966 |
| European Union | Metric | Required for trade |
| India | Metric (official) | Traditional units persist |
| China | Metric | Traditional 'mu' also used |
| Japan | Metric | Traditional 'tsubo' for real estate |
Why Conversion Isn't Intuitive
Area 変換係数s are squared compared to length:
- 1 foot = 0.3048 meters
- 1 square foot = 0.3048² = 0.0929 square meters
- So 1 square meter = 10.764 square feet (not 3.28)
This is why a room measured as "100 square feet" seems much smaller in square meters (9.3 m²) than you might expect.
Advantages of Each System
Metric Advantages
- Decimal relationships (easy math)
- International standard
- Consistent prefixes (kilo-, centi-, etc.)
- Used in science and engineering
Imperial Advantages
- Human-scale units (foot = roughly a foot)
- Historical property records in acres
- Familiar to US population
- Some convenient divisions (inches divide evenly)
一般的な変換 by Application
Real Estate
| US Listing | Metric Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft apartment | 93 m² |
| 2,000 sq ft house | 186 m² |
| 0.25 acre lot | 1,012 m² (0.1 ha) |
| 1 acre lot | 4,047 m² (0.4 ha) |
Agriculture
| US Measure | Metric Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 40 acres (quarter-quarter) | 16.2 hectares |
| 160 acres (quarter section) | 64.7 hectares |
| 640 acres (section) | 259 hectares (2.59 km²) |
まとめ
Metric and imperial area units serve the same purpose but with different origins and logic. Metric uses decimal relationships (hectare = 10,000 m²), while imperial evolved from historical measures (acre = area plowable in a day). The US primarily uses imperial; most of the world uses metric. 理解する both systems and their conversions (1 sq m ≈ 10.76 sq ft; 1 ha ≈ 2.47 acres) is essential for international work.
