MPG vs L/100km

Understanding Fuel Efficiency Units

Compare Units

The US uses miles per gallon (MPG); most of the world uses liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km). Understanding both systems helps when researching vehicles internationally or driving abroad.

Conversion

  • MPG to L/100km: 235.215 ÷ MPG = L/100km
  • L/100km to MPG: 235.215 ÷ L/100km = MPG

Note: UK gallons are larger than US gallons.

Conclusion

MPG (used in US/UK) and L/100km (used globally) measure the same thing differently. The inverse relationship means improvements aren't linear—going from 10 to 20 MPG saves more fuel than 30 to 40 MPG for the same distance.
